Furnace Troubleshooting Tips: Before You Call For Help, Give These A Try

Heating and cooling technicians love to be needed, but when your heating system seems to be acting up, you can do a little furnace troubleshooting before calling in a professional.

Here are a few common furnace-related problems and possible solutions. Some aspects of HVAC maintenance and repair should be performed by professionals, but these furnace troubleshooting techniques can be tried at home:

  • Your furnace is not producing heat. Check the thermostat first. Is it set where you want it? If you move it up or down a few degrees, does your furnace respond? If it doesn’t, try cleaning the contacts in your thermostat, if it’s not digital. If that doesn’t work, try resetting the circuit breaker that serves the furnace or replacing the fuse.
  • Your furnace is producing heat, but it is not enough to keep you comfortable. Check your air filter. A dirty filter can impede airflow.
  • Your furnace is cycling (turning on and off) too often. Again, check the air filter. If that’s not the problem, you might have a problem with the blower motor. If you are technically inclined, consider checking the belt. If it’s loose, tighten it; it should go down about an inch in the middle when you press. If the belt is frayed, install a new one.
  • Your furnace is making a racket. If it’s a high-pitched noise, your belt might be loose or the bearings in the motor or the shaft might need to be lubricated. If it is a low-pitched noise, you might need to adjust the pilot light. Most furnaces these days have electronic ignition, but there are a few pilots out there still.
  • Your furnace’s blower keeps running. Again, check your thermostat. It might have been inadvertently set to “fan continuous.” If your thermostat has no such setting, check the fan limit switch on the furnace itself. It might need to be reset or replaced.
