Yes, this can be done and is called retrofit solution. This will make your unit a dual fuel system. You can use the heat pump as the main heating devices as it will cut down your energy cost by 60 to 70%. The furnace can be used as a supplement in extremely cold weather, if additional heat is needed. In fact, the existing ductwork can also be used for the heat pump. You need not make a new one. If some minor modifications are needed your installer will do it.
